My friends in Singapore
In here I am staying in Hall 3 at NTU. When I first arrive here, I was crazy enough to sign up for the orientation camp of my Hall. I though it would be a good experience to meet people. So it was, but What I did and what I saw were totally unexpected, and different form what would have happened in the same kind of camp in France.
But anyway, it was a success talking about meeting pepole, because I could meet many locals and some of them are now very close friends of mine. In the Hall now, It's crazy. Everybody has a surname and I am the FR. It stands for the French Retarded Because since my english is not that good, I sometimes misunderstand some stuff, and the guys here like to make fun of it. But I guess in the end, I am not the Worse: Shannon, here is known as PITA (Pain In The Ass) because he is always telling dirty jokes, about everything, (which I like a lot :P ) . Him and I are very similar in our way of thinking (we both are very pervert). Just our manner are different and He never get used to me going in his room with my shoes. I am doing my best to change this bad habbit of him, but it will take time :)
Derek here is known as ER, because although he is 23, there are many MANY things he did not know at all (especially about girls). To me those stuffs are supposed to be the basic knowledge of every man older than 12 (just kiddin' Derek) . Anyway, would you believe that a 23 years old guy, totally normal and sane could not know what a sanitory napkin is ????? Don't tell him I wrote that down otherwise he's gonna kill me :) But anyway, to to get back to his nickname ER stands for... Everything Retarded of course :) . But you know, in the end, It's pretty cool to have such a guy as a friend, the way he does things is a way we have totally forgot because it was what we (every western guy I assume) were doing when we were 15 or 16. He is kind of totally innocent, and therefore to quote my friend kelly, he is very cute.
The next specimen we have here (Benjamin) is different : he goes to church every sunday and studies the Bible every day. Therefore his nickname : HM, The Holy Man. That doesn't mean at all that he has not been totally perverted at our contact. But that doesn't matter because he is very open minded and does not belongs to this kind of extremist catholic people who would be offended if somebody talks about wearing condoms.
I love them all and the four of us are happily hanging around together and we make quite a fun team, always in one another room chatting about nothing and everything. Singaporean are just crazy people, They just keep studying up to 4 am in the morning every night !!! I tried to do that a couple of times, but of course I could not stand it, and I had to skip my morning classes. Too bad :)
I took some picture of them in the shower, soon it will be published and you will judge by yourself that we are also what you could call a boyz band :)
In NTU, there are lot's of exchange student and I do know many of them. You know, when you go to a foreign country, you want to get deep into the culture and try to act as everybody does and understand the culture and why they actually act the way they do. But sometimes, You just want to switch back to what you were. This is when the exchange student community is important. What best than huge parties when everybody gets drunk to feel like at home ??? Nothing !! So we just do that quite often. We are helped by the US government because the US marines organize a party every two friday to at the US embassy. It's not a dancing party, but alcohol is cheap and it's definitely a good place to meet people.
Among the exchange students, I hang around mostly with the pepole I met at the very beginning because there are from my hall. Who do we have here : Chris, the German guy, Kelly The Australian, Andrew, Hilary and Kara from United States and Bjorn and Marcus from Sweden. The all of them are also very friendly and we get on very well with each other.
Kara actually started the French Retarded nickname and those kind of stuff spread around very fast.
The last but not the least, the one I am the happiest to have meet here (thanks Chris ;) ) is Yvonne. Yvonne does not sound very singaporean. Her chinese name is Kai Hong. She is in communication studies, and she was working on a project with Chris during the semester. If you are interested in our fairy alcoholic tale, click here :) .
